ARTISTS YOU SHOULD KNOW

Marc Piane
Great bassist, and the anchor of the Chris Greene Quartet. Awesome guy - just don't let his theories that link "giving dap" with the activation of the Wonder Twins frighten you.
Damian Espinosa
Superlative pianist, and a longtime friend and musical compadre, and the brains of the Quartet. CLAIMS to be a Star Wars and 80s movie expert, but has NEVER seen or heard of "Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon." How is that possible?
Tyrone Blair
The engine of the Chris Greene Quartet, stand-up guy and a powerful and versatile drummer. But he judges me. He doesn't verbalize it, but I know he's doing it. And I don't like it.
The J. Davis Trio.
Definitely Chicago's best live hip-hop band, a frequent employer...and a great group of guys. The mutant offspring of The Modern Jazz Quartet and A Tribe Called Quest.
Tommy Bradford
One of my favorite local saxophonists, a fashion plate, and my opponent in an ongoing "jazz beef." My buddy.
Jeffrey Lien
A burnin' and creative drummer - and a fellow Evanston resident.
Jarrard Harris
Wonderful alto saxophonist, educator, and a longtime friend. Clearly one of the handsomest men in Chicago. Seriously. This man cannot take a bad picture.
Lori McClain
Jazz vocalist, actress, comedienne...she does it all - and quite well, I might add.
Deep Blue Organ Trio
I LOVE this band. I defy you to find a tighter, funkier, more organic band (of ANY genre) in the city of Chicago. Some people go to church on Sundays. I go to the Green Mill on Tuesdays to see this band.
Jordan Baskin
A motherf***er of a piano player, and a fellow IU alum. To quote Marc Piane, Jordan definitely DOES NOT suck.
Will Howard
Raconteur, producer, and a FRIGHTENING electric bassist.
Dudley Owens
Monster young alto player. He sounds like Bunky Green on steroids.
Greg Ward
Awesomely talented and open-minded, and ubiquitous alto saxophonist. He plays so good, I want to break his fingers.
Eric Koppa
Bad-ass saxophonist, member of the Prohibition Orchestra, and all around decent fellow.
Steve Hashimoto
Great electric bassist, writer, town crier, and a voice of reason in this crazy business of music.
Ethan Sellers
Your one-stop shop for all things Ethan - musician, composer, thinker, affable guy. Leader of Tautologic. He also designed the cover for the new CGQ album.
Kalyan Pathak
Jazz drummer, percussionist and tabla MASTER.
Tommi Zender
Killer multi-instrumentalist and songwriter.
Chris Rob
Insanely talented singer and multi-instrumentalist. Chicago-born and NY based. The only man EVER to "out-Prince" me. EVER.
The Voodoo Kings
High energy blues-funk-rock band based in Chicago. Led by guitarist Mike Kranicke.

Shorefront
A quarterly publication documenting the African-American experience in Chicago's Northern suburbs.
Brookfield Jazz Society
A great, unpretentious group of jazz fans located in the western suburbs. You honestly couldn't ask for a more supportive and enthusiastic audience.
Hot Chicks with Douchebags.
Self-explanatory.
The Criterion Collection
Fellow movie nerds...UNITE!
African-American history links
Something for everybody.
Black People Love Us!
Indeed. This site is BRILLIANT.
Tucker Max!
Visit, read, and understand. An unlikely guru, of sorts.
Ed Motta
If Stevie Wonder, Jobim, and Chick Corea had a child, raised him in Brazil, and made him listen to American soul, Steely Dan and Broadway musical soundtracks - he might sound a little like this guy. One of my favorite artists.
Mint Condition
One of my favorite bands - and one of the most criminally underrated groups on the planet. Why these guys haven't really blown up the way they should requires a serious investigation.
Paul Maslin
Saxophonist, instrument repair person extrodinare.
My Damn Forum
A great online bulletin board. Post your music and have it critiqued. Discuss music, politics, religion, etc...
Engineer/producer/professor Nick Eipers.
Professor of audio technology @ Columbia College and engineer @ Shantyville studios. He engineered "jazz" for us. We'll be working with him again.
Branford Marsalis
Branford. Geez -- I should just quit and get a real job.
Maceo Parker
I owe my whole career to "Life on Planet Groove." In short, no Maceo, no me.
Steve Coleman
One of the best alto sax players and conceptualists on the planet - and a pivotal influence in everything I do. Born and raised in Chicago.
Gina Barge
Multi-talented writer, blogger, and wry urban sociolgist.
